A story inspired by the Austrian philosopher and writer Helene von Druskowitz’s years at Heil- und Pflegeanstalt Mauer Öhling between 1891-1918. The film is set in the crofter´s farm Storeteigen in Hardanger, Norway. Within the four walls of the house a female character (Arnhild Litleré) is trying to orientate herself in life. She struggles to lit a cigarette, communicate with birds and chase away unbidden guests. Thematically it is about how we find our way in isolation, and unfamiliar surroundings. Whispering Walls is one of several videos in the project Of Helene (2017-2023). Of Helene is based on circumstances in the Austrian philosopher and writer Helene von Druskowitz’s life and work. Von Druskowitz grew up in Vienna in a wealthy family and defended her doctorate of philosophy in 1878 in Zurich, as the second woman in Europe to do so. She co‑founded several women’s journals and wrote critically about religion, sexism, and Nietzsche’s philosophy. She was also upfront about her unhappy romance with the opera singer Therese Malten (Therese Müller, 1855–1930). After many setbacks in her personal life and her career, Helene was committed to a sanatorium in 1891, where she lived the final twenty-seven years of her life, primarily at the Mauer Öhling Heil und Pflege Anstalt in Amstetten, as well as stays at Wiener städtischen Heil- und Pflege Anstalt in Ybbs an der Donau. In 1905 she published her final work, the radical text Pessimistic Cardinal Principles: A Guide for Free Spirits, which was a furious takedown of men, religion, and the entire culture, even as she outlined an alternative world order. Because of this text, von Druskowitz was forced to write and sign a declaration that she would never publish another text again. Foto: Stillbilder frå video / videostill |
